It is more formal than impromptu speaking for the reason that the
latter requires the person concerned to stand barely a few minutes after a topic is given or suggested to him, and to
present a more or less short and informal
speech, improvising as the presenter goes along.
Extemporaneous speaking is very challenging. You can test through this how good a person is in speaking in public.
